Lack of Gender Equality in Turkey
Turkey ranks on position 79 in the UNPD's Human Development Index. Concerning social gender equality the country slips down to rank 125. The per capita income is high but this is not reflected in the progress of community life.
The overall per capita income in Turkey is high but only a small minority can benefit from it. On the Human Development Index concerning a long and healthy life and standards of life and education Turkey ranks on place 79 out of 182.
According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which was prepared based on data from 2007 and does not take into account the effects of the global economic crisis, Turkey loses further grounds in the ranking if it comes to gender equality.
No women around!
Turkey ranks on position 125 regarding the social gender-focused development index of human development.
Looking at gender equality in the field of adult literacy Turkey ranges on place 101, on the issue of schooling it is rank 146.
In the context of women's participation in economic and political life, women managers, the numbers of female employees and MPs and indicators such as income equality, Turkey keeps position 109 form a total of 101 countries according to the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM).
Regarding the Human Poverty Index (HPI) Turkey ranges high on rank 40 of 135 countries. This ranking considers measures such as the probability of dying before reaching the age of 40, children with malnutrition and access to clean water.
Migrants passing through the country
According to the report, Turkey is a country with closed boarders. In terms of migration Turkey ranks on position 108. 84 percent of all migrants move on to Europe. On the other hand, Turkey is on place 39 regarding migrants coming to Turkey. Looking at migrants staying in the country, Turkey ranks on position 126. In summary this means that migrants use Turkey as a transit country. (EÜ/VK)
