Lawsuit Against Theatre Amargi

Actress Genç of Theatre Amargi had a case brought against her for swearing at official on duty based on her lines in the play Spilled Unwritten She has stated that this kind of censorship applications are hindering the artistic creation process.

"Theater Amargi" actress Zehra Genç has a caes brought aganst her based on her lines in the play "Yazmadan Dökülenler" ("Spilled Unwritten") editted and written by the women members of "Theatre Amargi", functioning under the Amargi Women Solidarity Cooperative for two years. The theater is open only to women's participation .

After the performance in Balıkesir Salih Tozan Cultural Center on February 21 2004, Zehra Genç played a gypsy fortuneteller in the play and was sued for committing the crime of "swearing at an official on duty" while reading her lines..

Theatre Amargi members expressed their worries about the legitimization of censorship of media. They claimed that journalist Murat Ayasoglu of Balikesir's Demokrat newspapers called the police to intervene to the play "Yazmadan Dökülenler" in his story. (BB/CC/YE)
