The second hearing of Petty Officer master sergeant Hüseyin Güneş Özmen’s trial for murdering his wife Ayşe Yılbaş, an intern at Cerrahpaşa Medical School, was held at the 4th High Criminal Court of Istanbul on June 12. The court rejected the application by Purple Roof Women's Shelter and Foundation Amargi to join the trial on the side of the victim.
Lawyer Yasemin Öz told Bianet that the court rejected the application by Purple Roof and Amargi on the ground that they experienced no damages in this incident.
However, the women’s organizations are determined to follow the trial. The next hearing will again be in Sultanahmet Justice Hall and this time on July 10. The lawyers given authorization by victim’s father will follow the case.
Lawyer Hülya Gülbahar, the president of Ka-Der, established to support and educate the women candidates, points out that it is not fair to let the Institution of Social Services and Protection of Children (SHÇEK) participate in trials about children, but not the women’s organizations.
Hasbiye Günaçtı, an Amargi and Lambdaİstanbul volunteer, stated, “This is not an isolated case. Yılbaş was killed because she was a woman. She was a woman in this country trying to get a divorce. The men in this country kill the women for any reason. These women are usually their close ones.”
Günaçtı said that these are politic murders and they are a side in this trial to decipher this case.
Özmen shot his 24-year-old wife Yılbaş, who was trying to divorce him, 12 times in the Neurology service of Cerrahpaşa Medical School.
40 women’s organizations showed their support by asking the court to join the trial on the side of the victim. (BÇ/TK/TB)
